Our students participated in the "AI Challenge - Weather Forecasting Competition", which was co-organized by Hong Kong Education City (HKEdCity), the Hong Kong Observatory (HKO), Microsoft and the Hong Kong Meteorological Society.
Participants were required to make use of machine learning in AI and more than 6 million meteorological data of the past 10 years provided by the HKO to forecast the hourly temperature (good to 0.1 °C) at Zero Carbon Building in Kowloon Bay from 26-30 November 2018. They were also required to submit a PowerPoint and a 3-minute video to introduce how they used machine learning of AI in deducing their forecasts.
As participants of our school are only from F. 2 and F. 1, it was a challenging task for them as they were competing with many senior form students from other participating schools. Through joining this competition, they gained knowledge about machine learning, statistical data analysis and weather forecasting. Their problem-solving skills and awareness towards climate change were also deepened. With much time and effort spent in research and trials, our F2 students were able to produce accurate forecasts. They won one of the merit awards among 33 teams from 24 schools and their prizes were presented in the award ceremony held in Learning & Teaching Expo 2018 at Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre on 14th December 2018. Congratulations!
