Congratulations to Jonathon Ho (Class of 2020) for being shortlisted for the Grand Prize of the Student of the Year Awards co-organized by the South China Morning Post and The Hong Kong Jockey Club. This is an award to honor students with an ongoing commitment to excellence and a real willingness to contribute to the local society. Below is Jonathon’s reflection on his one-year journey.
“Looking back, being shortlisted for the Grand Prize of the Student of the Year Awards (SOTY) was more of an opportunity from dumb luck for me. Having previously applied for the Student of the Year Linguist Award when I was in Form 5, hints of doubt came to my mind when I compiled the application for the Grand Prize category amid my DSE schedule in Form 6. I would not have progressed this far without the kind guidance and care I gratefully received from the Principal and teachers. Just as how I explained in my introductory sharing in the interview on Zoom -- what I most valued was the chances I was given to chat and interact with other student leaders, listening to what they thought about their secondary school life, about their education system and their future development plans and endeavours. Even though candidates all came from very diverse school backgrounds, what fascinated most me was the exposure different students had in terms of popular culture and global socio-economic issues, as well as their varying thoughts and experiences about Hong Kong, and I was, too, profoundly inspired by our discussion on the measures our society might adopt for raising the sustainability of Hong Kong.
While the goal of winning the Grand Prize was not one of mine, I would hope that other candidates and I could continue to keep in touch, supporting one another using our multifaceted experiences and putting our mind together for our community and the world through ‘rational intellectual exchange’.”
Jonathon envisions a world with more empathy and rational intellectual exchange. Let’s read the Young Post attached to understand more about his beliefs!
