Wong Wing Yung Venice's Reflection

2019-2020 Outstanding Student Leaders Award aimed to cultivate future leaders, create a platform for nurturing elites, and to foster close communication among student leaders. All candidates came from different schools. Ten of these candidates were selected to be the outstanding student leaders in the end. It was my honor to have this precious opportunity to join this program and win the award this year.

Unlike the previous years of the program, this year focused on students' creativity and leadership skills. The whole program comprised different parts, including an orientation camp, online talks, and interviews. Candidates were also required to write proposals to plan an activity to contribute to society as the final output. In the making of our tailored social projects, we learnt more about the society and thus built a deeper bonding with our surrounding community.

My group decided to explore the theme of fast fashion. During the program, we created an Instagram page, designed posters and banners, as well as conducted a handicraft workshop in Cheung Sha Wan. Planning all these from scratch was not easy; however, it was a golden way to hone my problem-solving skills, and it, too, allowed me to have a more in-depth and precise understanding of myself. I have learnt that it is of crucial importance for us to view an issue from multiple perspectives and come up with feasible and concrete solutions.

Inevitably, all candidates needed to stay in contact through online means due to the pandemic. Nevertheless, we still built friendships and managed to have meetings on Skype for three to four hours almost every day just to write a comprehensive proposal. Frankly speaking, it was quite exhausting but with the vision that we were summoned to give our best and bring changes to our community, everything became worthwhile.

I am grateful to the school for the recommendation and unlimited support throughout the whole journey. This is definitely an invaluable and beneficial experience for me.
