A Day of Discovery

On 11 September 2024, a group of enthusiastic Biology Jubileans had an incredible opportunity to visit the esteemed Professor Ho Yin Edwin Chan's laboratory at the School of Life Sciences, Chinese University of Hong Kong.

As the Director of the School, Professor Chan is renowned for his groundbreaking research and dedication to understanding pathogenic pathways of repeat expansion diseases, including spinocerebellar ataxias, Huntington’s disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, and myotonic dystrophy—conditions that belong to a group of rare neurodegenerative and neuromuscular diseases.

Upon arrival, Professor Chan warmly welcomed us and began an engaging ‘research’ lesson in his laboratory. Our Jubileans explored two research projects, witnessing firsthand the innovative work being done in the laboratory. The hands-on demonstrations sparked their curiosity and passion for science, illustrating the practical applications of their studies.

Afterwards, Professor Chan led us to a conference room and shared his inspiring mission and vision in life sciences. He emphasized the importance of perseverance and the responsibility that comes with scientific knowledge. More importantly, Professor Chan believes that education should extend beyond personal achievements; it should also focus on uplifting communities and providing hope to those in need.

Deeply inspired by the school motto, "I am not born for myself alone," he passionately committed to choosing his study and career paths to help the needy, particularly after serving in voluntary activities during his time at BHJS, where he worked with children suffering from intellectual disabilities. His motivational sharing resonated deeply with the students, encouraging them to embrace challenges as opportunities for growth and to think about how they can contribute positively to society.

Not only was the visit an enlightening experience for our Jubileans, but it also highlighted a renewed sense of purpose and inspiration in life for them. The Jubileans were reminded that their education is not just a personal journey, but a pathway to contribute to the welfare of others. Professor Chan’s perseverance in his career, commitment to hope and resilience will undoubtedly leave a lasting impact on these young minds, encouraging them to embody the spirit of giving back to the community and striving for excellence in all their endeavors. Every individual has the power to make a difference as he believes.
