BHJS - Hong Kong’s Largest Commissioned School Solar Power Project Commissioning Ceremony
2019-08-14

A commissioning ceremony was held on 14 August 2019 at Bishop Hall Jubilee School, activating Hong Kong’s largest commissioned school solar power project taking part in the CLP Renewable Energy Feed-in Tariff Scheme to date.

The Hong Kong government advocates sustainable development. The Renewable Energy Feed-in Tariff Scheme introduced by CLP last year encourages the adoption and development of renewable energy in the private sector. Under the scheme, the power generated could be sold to CLP at a rate higher than the normal electricity tariff rate. In response to the government and CLP’s advocacy, Bishop Hall Jubilee School has successfully built and commissioned Hong Kong’s largest school solar power project under the CLP Renewable Energy Feed-in Tariff Scheme to date. With the welcome speech by the School Supervisor of Bishop Hall Jubilee School and the Under Secretary for Environment, Mr. Tse Chin-wan, being the Guest of Honor, the commissioning ceremony today witnessed Bishop Hall Jubilee School’s commitment to serving the society.

In collaboration with Widex Technology Development Limited, a total of 144 solar panels were installed on the rooftop of the Bishop Hall Jubilee School campus with a total capacity of 50 kW. It is projected that the system will produce 57,000 kWh of electricity each year, equivalent to the monthly electricity consumption of 160 four-person households, generating annual tariff revenues of HK$230,000. The revenues generated will be used to support student development, including providing scholarships and supporting the implementation of environmental and STEM education. The reduction in carbon dioxide emission resulting from this solar project will be 28,500 kg per annum, equivalent to 1,240 trees planted.

The project was developed with the full support of Dr. Y. B. Lee, a Council Member of the School. Dr. Y. B. Lee said, “We hope that the project will set an example to encourage more schools to develop solar energy facilities on campus, contributing to a low-carbon future of Hong Kong." He added," All tariff revenues derived from the project will be used for student development, including the distribution of scholarships and providing financial assistance to students with special needs in order to ensure that they will enjoy an equal opportunity for learning."

Widex is one of the most experienced solar power project developers in Hong Kong and has completed hundreds of solar power projects over the past 12 years. Widex’s Chief Executive Projects Director, Mrs. Maria Leung said, “I am honored to be able to use my 30 years of experience in the power sectors in Hong Kong and the Chinese Mainland to work with Bishop Hall Jubilee School, other schools and organizations to develop solar power systems and to assist in the implementation of energy conservation measures.” She added, “The solar power system at BHJS is equipped with high-efficiency solar panels and power optimizers to maximize the power output and to encourage students to make use of the detailed generation data for educational pursuits. We shall also assist in conducting sustainability education to promote the awareness of renewable energy and the importance of energy conservation amongst the students.”

To promote the knowledge and value of sustainable development to Hong Kong secondary school students and society, Bishop Hall Jubilee School incorporates the solar power project with an interdisciplinary education program. The principal, Ms. Wong Lee Lee said, “Through the solar energy project, the School will nurture students’ sense of social responsibility by providing them with opportunities to promote environment education inside and outside the School. The Student Ambassador Scheme at the School will make use of the solar panel system to educate primary students about STEM and renewable energy, promoting and practicing the vision and value of sustainable development”.

The School hopes that the project will further enhance students’ awareness of environment protection, nurturing them to become responsible and innovative citizens. It is hoped that the project will become a platform where technology, environmental protection, and education work together towards building a greener and more sustainable future.
